I’ve been running ads now for about 7 years.

I was 21 when I started.

Straight out of uni.

Staying in my mates spare room.

£200 to my name.

I can remember strolling into the M&C Saatchi offices for the first time.

And getting logged in to Facebook on my first day.

They had me analysing ads for weeks before I was allowed to take the reins.

Since then I've managed close to £20million in ad spend for dozens of businesses.

Advertising has and always will evolve...

…but here are some of the irrefutable laws of advertising I have learnt along the way…

📜 Law 1:

It's easy to sell what people want, hard to sell what people don't want

I was reminded of this last year when we ran a campaign about an AI event.

📜 Law 2:

You must first be understood before you can persuade

With Audible we spent hundreds of thousands of £'s on testing ad copy.

The winner?

'Discover audible with a free audiobook on us'

Clarity is the ultimate form of persuasion.

📜 Law 3:

Pain aversion is a stronger action driver than desire

So focus on the pain in your ads.

📜 Law 4:

No one wants to buy a thing…

They want to buy the transformation the thing gets them.

So sell the transformation, not the thing.

📜 Law 5:

No amount of good ads can fix a broken business model

Advertising = Creativity + Maths

You need the maths (specifically a high LTV) to be on your side.

📜 Law 6:

If you can’t scale its because your ads aren’t good enough

You probably haven’t “saturated” the market.

You just need to get better at influencing people who don’t know you yet.

📜 Law 7:

Effective advertising builds a positive relationship at high speed

Ineffective advertising build no relationship or the wrong relationship

📜 Law 8:

The more marketing you run, the more money you will make.

Every impression from every channel slowly compounds in the background.

📜 Law 9:

Brand is the ultimate marketing ‘hack’

It can amplify your results like nothing else.

📜 Law 10:

Volume negates luck

Anyone can have a 1 in 1,000 ad that performs so well it completely transforms their business.

They just need to test 1,000 ads.
