Welcome back 🫔

  • šŸŽØ How to apply this 4-step Viral Content Framework to your ads

Let’s go… šŸ‘‡

Last week, one of our Instagram posts went viral & got over 1.1m views.

It was completely organic. Not a penny spent promoting it.

Quick disclaimer: I am a novice when it comes to organic content…

In fact ALL the credit for this viral sensation belongs to Tabitha - our Creative Director.

Nonetheless… there are valuable lessons to be learnt from this organic post that we can apply to paid ad creatives to increase the returns we generate from them.

Because if we could create ad creatives that had engagement stats like these then getting customers would not be a problemā€¦šŸ‘‡

Before we dive in… it’s important to understand the role engagement plays when it comes to PAID ads.

Engagement = any interaction with your content (organic or paid)

This can be views, likes, comments, shares, saves etc.

When we run an ad on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc… we are exchanging money for eyeballs.

And whilst the ad platforms love taking our money…

…their #1 priority is their users.

Because if they have no users… they have no platform.

It’s important to understand this.

It’s why the platforms prefer to show ad content that is engaging.

And they will penalise you and charge you MORE for content that is not engaging.

Simply put…

āœ… Lots of engagement = MORE eyeballs for LESS money.

āŒ No engagement = LESS eyeballs for MORE money.

So the name of the game is to create ad creative that gets tons of engagement

It’s the algorithmic equivalent of injecting rocket fuel into your ads šŸŽļø

Let’s dissect this viral post & look at the 4 lessons you can apply to to your ads…

1. It looks native

All the best ads don’t look like ads.

  • This piece of content was shot on an iPhone.

  • It uses IG’s own captions.

Things that look too polished automatically put you at a disadvantage.

Make your ads in the style of content each platform wants.

2. The hook & loooooooooong caption

The first step in driving engagement is getting people to stop scrolling.

  • We leveraged the POV (point of view) hook which is notorious online.

  • We then had a ridiculously long caption.

It takes longer to read the caption, than to watch to the video.

This caused people to watch the video several times before reading it…

Which means we quickly racked up tons of engagement.

Seriously… look at the size of this caption.

3. It uses a trending sound

Swim with the tide, not against it.

Trends are you friend. Leverage them wisely by incorporating them into your content.

They work because they set expectations as to what the content is about.

  • We used trending audio which sets a comical tone

  • People immediately associate this sound with ā€˜funny’ content & are incentivised to watch the whole thing.

Our trending sound of choice šŸŽµ

4. It has a polarising topic

We’ve gone viral a few times now and EVERY time it was because we tapped into a polarising topic.

Create content that causes people to comment & you will win the game.

  • The algorithm doesn’t care if your engagement is positive or negative - it views it all the same.

  • Clearly you don’t want to ruffle feathers or damage your brand. So I am not suggesting you start posting outlandish content…

  • I am challenging you to think a bit deeper about your content & what you and your business stand for.

This instance is a great example…

The post is about the desk flags we all have in BOTTERS. HQ to let our colleagues know when we are deep working or available to chat/collaborate.

It is told from an exaggerated, slightly satirical point of view.

As a result - we saw a huge clash of people who loved the idea & people who abhorred it.

This resulted in 232 very entertaining comments, that ultimately set our algorithm on fire.

A sneak preview….

We also then responded to every comment.

Which caused people to like the comments.

And then comment even more.

Creating a virtuous cycle of engagement.

2,529 additional engagements on this reply alone…

If you want to laugh - you can read them all here.

So next time you are cooking up some ads, get the algorithms working in your favour by…

  1. Making your ads as native as possible

  2. Having strong hooks & testing looooooong captions

  3. Riding trends

  4. Creating comment-worthy content
