This week I had the honour of watching on of my team tie the knot!

It was a beautiful day.

And awesome to celebrate together.

Days like that are what all the hard work are for.

Something has been on my mind this week: brand.

For years I was a hardcore performance marketer.

Given huge budgets and strict conversion targets to hit.

So I was very anti-brand.

I thought that running campaigns to get impressions, reach and “awareness” was a total waste of time.

Especially when you don’t have millions to burn and need to generate a return from your ad spend.

I struggled to understand brand because it's this amorphous, intangible thing that you can’t easily measure.

But it was when I was chatting with two Entrepreneurs last Friday that my stance on this properly changed…

I’d met these two a few weeks ago at the Acquisition.com event in Las Vegas…

Where we had each spent $5,000 to attend, and then watched 50% of a room of 100 people sign up for a $15,000 upsell.

After, one of them remarked about how they would literally buy anything Alex & Leila offered them.

That’s when it clicked.

That’s the power of brand.

Brand is an association between two things.

And when you create positive & desirable associations with your brand, it compels people to buy from you.

And vice versa…

Like it or not we all have a brand.

It’s up to us to choose whether we proactively build it or not.

Consumer trust is thinning, and I believe the businesses that put themselves out there and build their brands will be the ones winning over the next decade.

Brand is the Great Differentiator

A brand is one of the ways you can differentiate anything.

It's the powerful association & goodwill that can enable you to price above the commoditised version of whatever you offer.

I know a few businesses in hyper competitive niches that are feeling a strain this year.

Supply has increased, but demand has stayed flat…

..resulting in higher competition for the available jobs.

As a result, prices are being dropped & margin destroyed in an attempt to win the business.

How do you compete in this situation?

  • Differentiate - Don't just compete on price. You have to offer something unique that others can't.

  • Value - Show your customers why you’re worth more. Educate them.

  • Relationships - Build trust with customers. People buy from those they trust.

Do all three for long enough, and they will become synonymous with your brand and start to work for you around the clock.

How do you build a positive brand?

Start by asking:

What three things do I want people to associate with me & my business?

Is it…

  • Quality?

  • Luxury?

  • Comfort?

  • Speed?

  • Results?

  • Competence?

  • Insight?

  • Innovation?

  • Fun?

Then ask:

How am I communicating about this to my audience?

You have to be the driving force.

If I had to summarise my strategy here into 10 bullets it would be…

  • Engage: Talk with your audience.

  • Stay Honest: Always tell the truth.

  • Be Clear: Show what you stand for.

  • Show Up: Be where your customers are.

  • Share Stories: Tell real customer stories.

  • Quality First: Offer great products or services.

  • Consistent Voice: Keep your message the same.

  • Be human: Show there's a person behind the brand.

  • Give Back: Support causes your audience cares about.

  • Value Feedback: Listen and learn from your customers.
