Last week something weird happened…
I had the worst open rate of my career: 7.6%
Not a typo. Seven point six percent.

I was totally bamboozled
Same people (you guys reading this!).
Same sending time.
Same type of content.
The subject line:
"The £3,000 pound tuna that saved this business..."
I'm honestly not sure what went wrong...
…but my hunch is the combination of a large number + three dots at the end sent my email straight to spam folder hell.
Anyway… there’s a lesson here as always.
In fact, it’s a painful truth about marketing:
You can have the world's best strategy.
Epic ads.
Killer copy.
Perfect timing.
Ideal audience.
But ONE technical glitch can destroy everything.
I've seen this pattern repeatedly:
- SMS reminders with broken links = 50% drop in webinar attendance
- Wrong Facebook pixel = burning money on useless traffic
- Slow landing page = losing 80% of clicks
- Bad email formatting = invisible to half your list
Honestly, once you know the basics of marketing, I swear the most common thing that wrecks people is basic technical things not working, breaking, or being too clunky.
So in the nicest possible way… check your sh*t! 😂
And then check it again.
I bet you’ll find something that needs a fix…
In other news, I went semi-viral on LinkedIn for this post about drawing red circles & lines on your ad creative.

Turns out this really split opinions…
Some thought it was genius.
Others (mainly creatives) saw it as blasphemous against their art.
I can see why, but your ads have ONE job… stop the scroll.
I don’t really care how aesthetically pleasing a creative looks.
(as long as it’s not damaging to the brand)
It either stops people scrolling or it doesn’t.
And time and time again, slightly random, unexpected red lines seem to keep doing that.
If you’ve never tried it - you should.
Take your best performing ad images and draw a red circle on them…
…I can practically guarantee you will see an uplift in performance.
